Mexico City Marathon Scandal

August 27, 2023

More than a third of this year's Mexico City Marathon participants expelled for cutting sections of the course.

Complaints arose as some runners were accused of using cars, public transport, and bikes to cheat during the race.

An investigation was launched, revealing that thousands of runners skipped some of the 5km checkpoints.

The Mexico City Sports Institute plans to invalidate the registration times of those who displayed unsportsmanlike behavior during the XL Mexico City Marathon Telcel 2023.

Some participants argue that they didn't cheat, blaming faulty trackers that failed to register at checkpoints.

The Mexico City Marathon is highly regarded, holding gold status with World Athletics for its exceptional planning and organization.

This isn't the first time the race expelled runners for cheating; in 2017, 6,000 were disqualified for not completing the full distance.

It's worth noting that none of the elite runners in the race are believed to have been expelled for cheating.

Recall the infamous 1980 Boston Marathon incident when Rosie Ruiz's victory was stripped after sneaking onto the course just before the finish line.
